Scalp Micropigmentation is a process commonly known as a hair tattoo or scalp tattoo. Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-invasive treatment that uses a very fine micro-needle to deposit pigment into the scalp. The result creates the appearance of tiny hair follicles or short hair stubble. If you are suffering hair loss, starting to recede, or are completely bald, we can give you the look of a short buzz cut. Scalp micropigmentation can also be used on facial hair and to ‘fill in’ areas of longer hair that are thinning.
Most clients should expect 3 sessions to complete their treatment, but this will depend on the extent of hair loss or scarring that you have. Some clients will require a fourth session, especially if the aftercare guidelines are not followed correctly. These treatments are usually spaced about 10-21 days apart. For most clients, the first and second sessions will be 10 days apart and second and third sessions 3 weeks apart. We will discuss the treatment and sessions required during your consultation.
Each Scalp Micropigmentation treatment session typically takes 2-4 hours per session, although this depends on your degree of hair loss. We will discuss the treatment and sessions required during your consultation.
After completion of your treatment (usually 3 sessions), most clients will not need follow up treatment for up to 6 years. However, this depends how you look after your treatment; some clients may need a touch up after 3 years. Sunburn/peeling, use of an SPF, whether you foil shave or wet shave, regularly exfoliate and moisturise will all affect the durability of your micropigmentation.
During your consultation, we will fully explain the treatment and all the relevant post-treatment care required to keep your scalp looking at its best. It’s simple – look after your treatment and your treatment will look after you!
When you notice that the colour has lightened, we will arrange a ‘touch up’ session to restore any fading and ensure many more years of your style.
Scalp micropigmentation consistently produces a natural undetectable look. We pride ourselves on seamlessly replicating every individual dual hair follicle to create a perfect match for each client. Take a look at our gallery to see the results!
Scalp micropigmentation is non-invasive, and you shouldn’t need to take any time away from work or school. There will be some activities that you need to avoid for a short period, these are detailed in our treatment information, and will be discussed during your consultation.
It’s common to experience some redness on your scalp for 2-3 days after treatment, but this will subside quickly. If you need to, you will be able to wear a hat or headwear after treatment.
Your treatment specialist will help you to choose the hairline that will work best for you. We have experience on how to fit a hairline to head shape and age. During the treatment process, we can also tweak and adjust the hairline for a perfect result.
Scalp Micropigmentation is often referred to as a cosmetic hair or scalp tattoo, with the treatment typically lasting up to 6 years. After that time, you may experience some slight lightening, at which point you can have a ‘touch up’ treatment. We will discuss the treatment and follow ups during your consultation.
No. Scalp micropigmentation is a form of permanent cosmetics, but unlike tattoo ink, scalp pigment is designed to stay within the same color spectrum of short cut hair. The pigment is entirely natural and contains no additional colorants or additive. It will lighten but not discolour over an extended time.
Scalp micropigmentation uses different equipment which is specifically designed for micropigmentation of the scalp and not for tattooing.
The treatment process is also highly important to the success of scalp pigmentation. There is a fine line between a great authentic job and a terrible fake looking job.
If incorrectly carried out and the ink goes too deep into the scalp, the dermis area, or the blood stream, this can cause ink migration and the treatment could change colour over a short period of time. However, with ScalPerfection, that won’t happen. Grant is a certified, experienced scalp micropigmentation specialist and our reviews speak for themselves.
This will depend on the extent and pattern of the thinning hair that you have. Some clients can keep a longer length of hair because scalp pigmentation helps thicken the thinning areas so that less of the scalp is seen.
However, if you have a strong pattern of hair loss or just not a lot of hair density left, we will recommend that you cut it shorter to blend with the micropigmentation. We will assess your hair loss and discuss this during your consultation.
Yes. As we recommend that most clients cut their hair to a short, buzzed length, you will see that the grey hair appears darker because the hair root itself is darker. Additionally, we can use a grey-scale pigment that can be adjusted to blend with lighter hair tones. We simply create a lighter dilution for blending into the existing grey hairs.
Absolutely! We can replicate tiny hair follicles on the scar and blend the colour around the scarring area. We’ve had great success with both hair transplant and surgical scars, see our gallery for examples.
Yes! We are able to match the shade of hair follicles to a wide range of skin tones.
Most clients say that the pain is minimal and certainly less painful than traditional tattoos. After your session, you shouldn’t experience any further discomfort.
Yes! We use our scalp micropigmentation to deposit colour matched pigment into the scar to disguise it. Please see our Scalp Micropigmentation for Scars page or Gallery for examples of our work.
No, the scalp micropigmentation treatment will not grow your hair back, it will only give you the look of short hair or a tight buzz-cut. We recommend keeping your hair at a short length to gain the most natural outcome.
Not at all. Scalp Micropigmentation is carried out in between hair follicles to create depth and mimic natural growth. The needle does not interfere with the actual follicle and only penetrates up to 2 mm deep, which is quite shallow. Even if the technician does place pigment over the hair follicle, there should be no damage and it will not interfere with future growth or damage existing hair.
We recommend no heavy sweating or intense exercise for 4-5 days after your scalp micropigmentation treatment.
We will discuss this during your consultation, but usually you can continue to use Propecia during and after scalp pigmentation, but Rogaine (topical minoxidil) should be suspended during the course of treatment and for 30 days post your final session.
This will ensure proper healing and settling of pigment without interference of the chemicals that are present in Rogaine.
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a form of permanent cosmetics, but unlike tattooing or permanent makeup, this treatment replicates the look of short cut hair by using pointillism (small dots). Scalp Micropigmentation also uses different equipment than traditional tattooing, with a needle and machine that are designed specifically for micropigmentation of the scalp.
Yes, please check out our gallery page which shows our client’s before and after images. Our technician Grant has also been through the procedure himself and is always happy to show his own results!
We recommend no scrubbing, shampooing, or shaving over the treated area for 4-5 days after your micropigmentation treatment.
Yes, you can wear a hat or a skullcap after your scalp micropigmentation treatment. However, we’re sure you’ll want to show your results rather than cover them!
We recommend you avoid chlorinated pools, saunas, steam rooms, and tanning beds for 28 days after your final scalp micropigmentation session.
It’s completely normal for your treatment to fade after your first micropigmentation session. The second and third sessions will add more density and create a fuller look. Pigment retention varies for each person and some may notice more lightening or fading that others.
In the scalp micropigmentation process, pigments are inserted into the scalp. The molecules in your body that are involved with hair pigmentation also control certain immune genes. In someone with an overactive immune system, the micropigmentation can fade faster than normal. At ScalPerfection, we will use the correct method and start the treatment light, building up to your correct follicle tone/hair colour. It’s important that your trust the process.
We will discuss fading and immune systems further in your consultation.
Yes, SMP can be removed with the use of a laser, in a similar technique to tattoo removal. If scalp micropigmentation was initially carried out correctly, it can be almost completely removed in one session, although a second session if usually needed to complete the process, especially if it involves the whole scalp.

Will is a top bloke who listens to your needs and does as much as he can to help you. I’ve seen other places that do the same procedure but they look very fake and you can tell they’ve had something done. Will does his best to make it look as natural as possible.Posted on Nigel HarleyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Fantastic service, end result looks great. Will went through what the desired outcome was and adapted to what I was after, then delivered and demonstrated great skill/artistry.Posted on Igor MahovlicTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had the chance to visit Will and Scalp Nation as an SMP artist myself, spend a full day with Will, and watch a first treatment live in the studio. Throughout the session I was also able to ask all my questions about his technique and why he approaches things the way he does. The atmosphere was relaxed yet incredibly professional – you could really feel it. Warm, genuine, super friendly and attentive. Highly skilled, with a unique style and, in my opinion, one of the best SMP techniques I’ve seen to date. I’d recommend Will and Scalp Nation not only to anyone considering SMP, but also to fellow SMP artists who want to sharpen their skills and take things to the next level through a Scalp Nation “shadow-day” MasterClass. For me it’s an easy 5💫 – nothing but love and respect from the Black Forest, Germany. Thx for everything my friend. 🙏🏼 Your boi - IGGY from SCALPZONE 🫡Posted on Maitzy JPTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My name is Jack, I am 27 from Northern Ireland I operate a micro pigmentation clinic in Holywood N.ireland. I recently had the opportunity to do a training/shadow day with Will at Scalp Nation to learn more about scalp micropigmentation, and the experience was fantastic. Will took the time to clearly explain the process step by step, and made sure I understood not only the technical side but also the finer details that make all the difference. The one-on-one time I had with him afterwards was extremely valuable—he was patient, thorough, and answered all my questions in a way that really built my confidence. What stood out most was his ongoing support. Even after the training day, Will has continued to be approachable and helpful whenever I’ve needed guidance. To top it all off, I also received a certificate at the end, which was a great way to round off an already excellent experience. I’d highly recommend training with Will at Scalp Nation to anyone interested in scalp micropigmentation—his knowledge, professionalism, and support are second to none.Posted on Sean GallagherTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I was over with will for a day watching him work his magic and then I told him any of the things I wanted to brush up on and he really helped me.i left there felling a lot more confident.i liked how he hadn’t got a script that he just went over and instead asked me was there anything I wasn’t sure about and more worked on the stuff I needed his knowledge on and he has no end to knowledge when it comes to SMP.was a pressure learning from him and you couldn’t meet a nicer fella.i will definitely be back over the water again with him in the future to learn more of his techniquesPosted on Isaac YoungTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My experience at Scalp Nation has been nothing short of excellent. I suffer from LLP, a rare form of scarring alopecia, which severely affected my confidence from a young age. Throughout my teenage years and into my 20s, going out without feeling self-conscious was always a struggle until I discovered SMP and Will’s clinic online. From the very beginning, Will was professional, accommodating, and understanding. I first visited Scalp Nation for a trichology consultation to determine the cause of my hair loss. Will provided a very detailed and insightful report, which ultimately led me to choose SMP as my treatment option. I had been considering SMP for about a year, but I didn’t want to go down the surgical route and due to my condition and research, it posed too many risks. From my very first session, the experience with Will was nothing but positive. I walked in feeling nervous, but Will went out of his way to put me at ease and reassure me that I’d feel confident once the process was complete. Walking out of my third session, I can honestly say that was an understatement. The results are fantastic the treatment has given me a huge confidence boost and a better quality of life. I’m so glad I put my trust in Will and Scalp Nation. I would highly recommend them to anyone dealing with alopecia or any form of hair loss. — Isaac
