Course 02 / Retraining Programme

Advanced Beginners SMP Training. Retrain Correctly.

For artists who trained in scalp micropigmentation within the last two years but still lack confidence, consistency, or clarity in their work. If your foundations weren't laid properly the first time around, this is where you fix them. Properly, ethically, and to an elite standard.

Hear from our trainees

Real artists who came through ScalPerfection training, in their own words. The conversations they have on camera are the same ones they'd have over a coffee. We don't script any of them.

Does any of this sound uncomfortably familiar?

If you've trained in SMP within the last two years and find yourself thinking any of the below, you're not alone, and it's not your fault. It's a foundations problem.

"I wish I'd paid more for a proper course."

A cheap one-day course felt like a smart move at the time. Now you're working on paying clients and you realise just how thin the foundations were. You're not alone, and it's fixable.

"My old trainer doesn't respond to my messages."

You paid for training, you got the certificate, then they vanished. Now you're stuck without anyone to ask when something goes wrong, and Google searches only go so far.

"I wish I'd had three sessions with a proper trainer."

Watching someone demo for an afternoon and being thrown onto a paying client isn't training. The thing you needed most (proper multi-session work on a real model with real healing time in between) is the thing they didn't give you.

"I learned the theory but I freeze on real skin."

You can describe needle depth, pigment selection and hairline design in detail. But the moment a paying client sits in your chair, the gap between knowing and doing widens by the second.

"My healed results don't match my session-one work."

Pigment migration, blur, blue-shift, fading in patches. These are the classic symptoms of training that never followed work through to the healed stage.

"I'm pricing too low because I don't trust my work."

Confidence directly drives pricing. When you don't fully trust your own technique, you discount to compensate, and the business never quite becomes sustainable.

The course built for the retrained SMP artist.

A structured retraining programme, not a refresher day. It takes you back through the full clinical process with the depth your original training missed.

The ScalPerfection Advanced Beginners programme was built for a very specific group of people: practitioners who completed an SMP course somewhere else within the last two years, and now need to rebuild from solid foundations.

This is not a refresher day. It's a structured retraining programme that takes you back through the full clinical process, but this time with the technical depth, healed-result feedback, and one-to-one correction that was probably missing from your original training.

You'll work under award-winning, CPD-accredited SMP artist Grant Emerson. One-to-one. In person. Across a full treatment cycle on a real model, from start to finish.

Course structure: 2 days theory, 3 days practical, over 5 weeks.

Two days of theory fundamentals to properly re-ground you, followed by three full practical days on real models spread across the next 5 weeks. Proper healing time between each practical session, so you finally get to see how your work behaves over time. Not just on day one.

Days 1 to 2

Theory Fundamentals

Two intensive days rebuilding your foundations. Skin theory, pigment behaviour, machine setup, hairline design principles, consultation frameworks, healed-result diagnosis. The depth your original training skipped.

Practical Day 1

Audit & Foundation

An honest assessment of your current technique, followed by the foundational pigment layer on a real model under direct supervision throughout the day.

Practical Day 2

Healed-Result Diagnosis

The session that most SMP courses skip entirely. We review the healed result of practical day 1 together, identify what migrated, what blurred, and what held, then adjust the technique in real time.

Practical Day 3

Final Refinement & Sign-off

You complete the treatment. Final blending, density layering, hairline refinement, aftercare protocols, and certification once we've assessed the fully healed result.

What the Advanced Beginners course covers

A targeted retraining curriculum designed around the specific weaknesses we see most often in artists who trained on short or rushed courses elsewhere.

1

Technique Audit

Honest review of your current technique using before/after work you bring with you.

2

Healed-Result Reading

How to look at a healed scalp and diagnose exactly what went right and wrong session-to-session.

3

Pigment Selection

Choosing the right pigment for skin tone, undertone, and long-term healing behaviour.

4

Hairline Decisions

Confident hairline placement for age, face shape, recession pattern and ethnicity.

5

Pressure & Depth Control

The single biggest cause of poor healed results, and how to fix it permanently.

6

Consultation Framework

A repeatable framework for assessing suitability, taking medical history, and managing expectations.

7

Pricing Confidence

How to price your work properly, and how to stop discounting just because you don't fully trust your technique.

8

Business Repositioning

Marketing, social media, portfolio rebuild, and how to relaunch with confidence after retraining.

How the ScalPerfection retrain compares to where you trained before

If you trained on a short course and came away without the confidence to practise, this comparison probably explains why.

Frequently asked questions about SMP retraining

I trained over two years ago. Is this course still right for me?
The Advanced Beginners programme is specifically calibrated for artists who trained within the last two years. If you trained longer ago than that and have been practising consistently since, the Masterclass programme is probably a better fit for you. Get in touch and we'll point you to the right one.
Do I need to bring my portfolio or examples of my current work?
Yes. Bring everything you have. Healed photos in particular are gold. We use your existing work to run the technique audit at the start of the programme, and that makes the retraining far more targeted, and far more effective.
Will I receive a new certificate after retraining?
Yes. On successful completion you receive a CPD-accredited certificate from ScalPerfection, separate from any qualification you hold from previous training.
Can I keep practising on clients while I retrain?
That's a decision only you can make, and it depends on the honest state of your current technique. We'd encourage you to be conservative on this. Retraining exists because something wasn't working, and clients deserve full confidence on the other side of the chair. We'll discuss this during your initial call.
Is the retraining done in person or online?
Strictly in person at our UK training academy. SMP technique cannot be retrained online. The whole point of this programme is hands-on correction across real skin and real healing cycles.
How is this different from the Masterclass Training?
Advanced Beginners rebuilds fundamentals for artists who trained in the last two years and lack confidence. The Masterclass programme is for experienced artists with two or more years in the industry who want to refine, elevate or future-proof a practice that's already functioning. Different problem, different solution.
